High school wrestling: South Jeff wins FL title; Ryan Snow named MOW

PHILADELPHIA — General Brown was on its way to matching South Jefferson’s historic 2012-13 wrestling season, which ended with a state dual meet title.

But the Spartans, who have fallen victim to the Lions in three dual meets this year, all but squashed those hopes during Saturday’s Frontier League championships at Indian River Middle School.

Five individual champions lifted South Jefferson to its second straight team title, edging out its chief rival General Brown, 224-209, in the team standings.

Seniors Daniel Smith (182 pounds) and Jared Carroll (106) each won their second straight individual title, while Logan LaFlamme (195), Holden Pelton (138) and Trey LaFlamme (99) claimed their respective divisions for South Jefferson.

“We lost to General Brown in all the dual meets, so to beat them here, we’re pretty happy about that,” Smith said.

The Lions are 28-0 in dual meets this season and had captured four invitational titles. Last season, the Spartans went 28-0 but also finished first in each of their eight invitational events.

General Brown senior Tyler Silverthorn, who won his third league title in a row at 152, said: “This was very important because we were trying to be state (dual meet) champs, and I don’t know if we can do that now.”

General Brown also finished as runners-up to South Jefferson in last year’s tournament. The only league dual meet losses for both teams in the last two years have come to each other.

“It’s been a fun rivalry the past few years. It keeps it exciting and it’s good to have it for the Frontier League,” Smith said.

“We’ve always been rivals and to come out with the win here in our senior year feels good,” Logan LaFlamme added.

Lions’ senior Ryan Snow earned Most Outstanding Wrestler honors after beating Indian River’s Nick Toutant in triple overtime in a dramatic 126 final that stole the show.

Snow scored the win by escaping Toutant in the closing seconds of the third overtime. Toutant scored a point in the final seconds of the third round to force the extra periods.

“That scared me for a little bit, but going through the overtimes I kind of re-focused and pulled out the win,” Snow said.

Toutant was last year’s MOW after defeating Snow in the finals, and Snow won his first league title by defeating Toutant in 2012.

“Every year we seem to wrestle each other three of four times,” Snow said. “We go back and forth, wrestling-wise, but the friendship is pretty strong. We always see each other in the offseason and say ‘Hi’ and hang out.”

IHC senior Nick Koelmel claimed the 160 title for his second straight league championship and fourth overall.

Carthage senior Trevor Gibbons (285) and sophomore Andy McFarland (113) each scored pins to win their second consecutive league titles.

Garrett Fields (120) and Riccardo Dawkins (220) won their respective classes for General Brown.

First-time league champions were Copenhagen junior Brenden Jacobs (132), Sandy Creek senior Zach Pfluger (145) and Indian River sophomore Sonny McPherson (170).

Indian River finished third in the team standings, just a half-point ahead of Carthage.

The Section 3 Class A-D championships are scheduled for Saturday, and the Section 3 individual tournament will follow on Feb. 15.

The state tournament is Feb. 28-March 1 at the Times Union Center in Albany.
