College baseball: Simmons plans to attend Coker College

Jefferson Community College sophomore Kyle Simmons accepted an athletic scholarship to play baseball for the defending Division II national champion Coker College on Monday.

Simmons, a 2012 Watertown High School graduate, hit for a .455 batting average and drove in 55 runs in 45 games last season to lead the Cannoneers to a 20-8 Region 3 Eastern Division record and the second seed in the regional playoffs.

Simmons’s 70 hits included 14 doubles and eight triples. He scored 45 runs and hit .526 with runners in scoring position. The shortstop also hit .266 to help the Fulton Railroaders of Kentucky win the Ohio Valley League Championship last summer.

Coker College of the South Atlantic Conference in Hartsville, S.C., went 38-16 last year and captured the D-II World Series championship.
