MASSENA - The Massena Central varsity boys basketball team went to a greater length to earn a chance to play for a share of the NAC Central Division regular season title.
We just outlasted them, said Raider coach Tom Miller after his squad raised its division record to 12-1 with an 83-76 double-overtime win at home over Franklin Academy on Tuesday.
With the win, the Raiders stayed one loss behind unbeaten division leading OFA, which moved to 12-0 with an 80-37 decision over Potsdam in another Tuesday night matchup.
We needed this win just to have a chance at sharing the league championship. It should all come down to Friday in Ogdensburg, Miller noted.
Massena 83, FA 76 (2OT): Against the Huskies, senior center Xavier Viskovich stepped up to score the majority of his game-high 24 points in the second half and the two four-minute overtime sessions, sending the game into the second OT when he converted from the low post with just two seconds left in the first which saw both teams produced 13 points. The Raiders then outscored the Huskies 9-2 in the second extra session to secure the win.
Dante Viskovich added 21 points toward the winning effort while Rhoades Tarbell netted 14 and Tyler Haas another 12. Logan Deshane and Zevon Viskovich chipped in five points apiece. Bailey LaBarge accounted for the other two.
Alex Johnson led FA (13-4, 9-4) with 22 points, including a trio of three-pointers. Kody Mulverhill also struck for three three-pointers in a 17-point outing. Austin Lamay chipped in 15 points followed by Jordan Yando with seven.
Massena also won the JV contest to set up a potential showdown with OFA for a share of the league banner on Friday.
OFA 80, Potsdam 37: The host Sandstoners went into halftime trailing just 34-24 before the Blue Devils put together a decisive 22-2 third-run run.
Our guys did a good job and grinding it out in the first half. We were working hard and we were competing. The kids came to play but werent able to sustain it for the second half, noted coach Brooks Bigwarfe.
Ogdensburg has a strong team. They picked up the intensity in the third quarter and we werent able to match it, he added.
Dequan Pitts paced the Sandstoners offensively with 10 points, including two of the seven three-pointers they hit as a team. Nick Vaccaro and Travis Stephenson, who were competing in the final home game of their varsity basketball careers as the lone seniors on this years Potsdam squad, chipped in six points apiece along with Jack Byrnes. Jake Mitchell, Matt Stone and Connor Prosper all drilled solo three-pointers to close out the Sandstoner scoresheet.
Junior Kinnon LaRose fired through a game-high 29 points for the Blue Devils (15-1, 12-0), who close out the regular season with a pair of games at home against Salmon River this evening and Massena on Friday. Seth Pinkerton delivered another 18 points toward the winning effort on Tuesday followed by Colin Ross with 15 and Matt Piercey with nine.
The Sandstoners (8-9, 6-7) are slated to close out the regular season on Friday at Gouverneur.
In the other Central Division boys basketball games played on Tuesday, Salmon River outlasted St. Lawrence Central 45-40 and Gouverneur turned back Canton 54-52.
Salmon River 45, SLC 40: In Brasher Falls, the visiting Shamrocks worked their way to a 30-22 lead through the first three quarters before holding off the Larries for the win. Antoine Domino led the Salmon River scoring with 13 points followed by Kason Tarbell with 11, Russ Oakes with nine, Josh Hynes with seven, Justin Bigness with three and Zach Smith with two.
Josh White fired through a game-high 19 points in the losing effort. Cody Meacham connected for three three-pointers in contributing 11 points. Shane Fuentes and Bradley Francis added four points apiece while Jayce Lanning accounted for the other two.
The Shamrocks travel to Ogdensburg tonight for a make-up game against OFA while the Larries (2-15, 0-13) close out the regular season on Friday in Malone.
Gouverneur 54, Canton 52: In Gouverneur, Devin Cox generated a game-high 19 points as the host Wildcats (6-10, 3-9) outscored the Golden Bears 20-18 in the fourth quarter for the win. Curt LaPlant added 16 points followed by Dustin Hutton with nine.
Ryan Caldwell and Evan LaPoint scored 13 points each for Canton (7-9, 4-9) while Louden Porter tallied another 11.
The lone NAC Central Division varsity girls basketball game played on Tuesday saw OFA outscore Salmon River 65-57.
Susie Morrow paced the winning offense with 15 points followed by Courtney Sherwin with 10, Riley Luckie with nine and Taylor Perry with eight as OFA overcame a 24-16 first-quarter deficit with a 17-2 second-quarter run before going on to turn back the Lady Shamrocks after the halftime break.
Jaden Mitchell led all scorers with 21 points, including five three-pointers, to anchor the Salmon River offense. Taylor Francis netted four three-pointers in a 17-point effort. Kwiio King added seven points followed by Jocelyn Martin with six. Kaylin Oakes, Tsiotenhariio Herne and Brittany Brooks chipped in two points each.
The Lady Shamrocks are slated to play at Canton on Friday.
