RAYMONDVILLE - Three people were taken to Massena Memorial Hospital following an accident Wednesday morning on state Route 56 in the town of Norfolk that involved a beer truck owned by Cappione, Inc., Massena.

Norfolk Volunteer Fire Department Chief Greg Monroe said the accident occurred at approximately 6:50 a.m. on a bend in the road near the Parkway Express convenience store.

State police said a pickup truck operated by Kevin LaPage, 47, of Raymondville was navigating around the bend, just north of the convenience store when he entered the oncoming lane of traffic, striking the beer truck nearly head-on.

The beer truck was operated by Randy McGregor, 53, of Raymondville. A passenger inside the truck, Andrew Phillips, 36, of Brasher Falls was also injured.

Troopers said each of the three men were taken to Massena Memorial Hospital, where they were treated and released.

In order to better manage the scene, Mr. Monroe said state Route 56 from state Route 310 to West Hatfield Street was closed. That stretch of Route 56 was reopened at 10:10 a.m.

When asked if weather played a role in the accident, state police said that it likely did.

In addition to Norfolk Fire and state police, Mr. Monroe said, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), the Norfolk Volunteer Rescue Squad and Seaway Valley Ambulance all responded to the scene.

DEC Spokesman Steven W. Litwhiler said approximately 30 gallons of diesel was spilled as a result of the accident.

“The company hired Op-Tech (Op-Tech Environmental Services, Massena) to come and clean it up, and they were off the scene by 10:30 a.m.,” Mr. Litwhiler said.
