Robert J. Long,69 of Brownville passed away Wednesday morning at the Samaritan Medical center where he had been a patient since January 26th.
Robert was born on March 7, 1944 in Syracuse N.Y. the son of Edwin N. and Arvilla A. Elethorp. He attended schools in both Hammond and Clayton. He entered the Navy Reserves in 1961 and was honorably discharged in 1964.
He married Jacqueline Doull on September 10, 1966 at Immaculate Conception Church by Fr. Ruddy in Brownville. The couple lived in the Brownville area most of their married lives.
Robert was a Heavy Equipment Operator for N.Y. State DOT retiring in April of 2001. He was a member of the Brownville Fire Dept for 42 years and was a member of Allen-Gilles Post 588 Brownville American Legion. He enjoyed woodworking , built replicas of N.Y. States Heavy Equipment and gardening.
He is survived by his wife Jacqueline and a son Robert T. and his wife Kathryn Long of Waddiington, and daughters Michelle Long of Brownville and Jennifer Cross and her husband Roger of Smyrna, Tenn. He also has 8 grandchildren and three nieces and one nephew. Two brothers: David (Jill) Long of DeLand, Florida and Gary Long of Orlando, Florida.
Funeral services are tentatively scheduled Saturday 11:00 a.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home, Dexter with Rev. Leon VanWie of Asbury United Methodist Church of Watertown. Burial will be in Brownville Cemetery in the spring. Calling hours will be 7:00-9:00 P.M. on Friday. Donations may be made to Brownville Fire Dept. c/o Steve Mott.
