MASSENA - A Massena couple was charged with second-degree harassment and endangering the welfare of a child following an argument with the womans parents that turned physical.
Village police charged Edward J. Slade, 22, of 34 Center St., Massena, and Hannah L. Hayden, 22, of 69 Beach St., Massena, with the two charges Friday morning following an investigation into an incident that occurred at 10 p.m. Wednesday.
Slade reportedly grabbed Perry Hayden and threw him to the ground after he came to the defense of his wife, Bobbie, who had been arguing with the couple. Hannah reportedly grabbed her mother by hair and shoved her into a wall.
Court documents indicate the elder Ms. Hayden enraged the couple when she expressed concern that they didnt have enough formula for their 1-year-old baby.
When I asked Hannah for her to just show me the formula and that I would leave her alone, Ed spoke up and told me to get ... out. He then began screaming at me. When I told Ed that I wouldnt leave and that it was my house, he got up and charged at me, telling me that he could just smack me. I then told Ed I was calling my husband, Perry, to have him come home. At that time, Ed said good and that he was looking for a reason to kick his ..., the elder Ms. Hayden noted in her statement to police.
She said she then left the bedroom area occupied by her daughter and her boyfriend due to concerns about her safety. She said she heard Slade yelling at her daughter, urging her to pound her mother.
She said when her husband returned home he told Slade he needed to leave the residence. She said when Slade started to go after her husband Mr. Hayden went into his room and grabbed his pistol for protection before confronting her daughters boyfriend a second time.
Hannah then came down and attacked me while at the bottom of the stairs, she said, noting her 14-year-old son then intervened, pulling his sister off his mother.
At this point, when Perry turned to look at what was going on with us, Ed jumped on his back and brought him to the ground. When I ran up the stairs, Ed was on top of Perry and wouldnt get off from him. I then ... grabbed another gun to scare Ed off from Perry. At this point, Ed got up and ran out of the house, Ms. Hayden said in the statement she provided police.
Slade told police he had been doing dishes and cleaning the house and the couple had been paying his girlfriends parents $75 per week for expenses to stay at the residence. He told police Mr. Hayden had cocked the pistol at one point during their argument. He said he had lunged at Mr. Hayden, put him in a headlock and pinned the hand down that was holding the .45 Magnum.
Slade was arraigned by Massena Town Justice Gerald P. Sharlow and released under the supervision of the probation department with a stipulation he abide by a temporary order of protection directing him to have no contact with Ms. Hayden and her teenage son.
The younger Ms. Hayden was also arraigned by Judge Sharlow and released under the supervision of the probation department with a stipulation she abide by a temporary order of protection directing her to not harass her mother or brother.
