The headquarters of the 10th Mountain Division took command of Afghanistans Regional Command-East at a ceremony Thursday on Bagram Airfield.
The divison replaces the headquarters of the 101st Airborne Division in the role. Presiding over the ceremony was Army Chief of Staff Gen. Raymond Odierno.
The eastern region has an area roughly the size of Virginia, which includes 14 provinces and 7.5 million Afghans and borders Pakistan to its east.
The division is in the midst of a yearlong deployment in country, coinciding with the end of major American military operations at the end of the year. During that time, it will be charged with advising Afghan security personnel and downsizing American military facilities.
