Heuvelton hands Hermon-DeKalb first NAC West setback

HEUVELTON - In the first NAC West Girls Basketball meeting between Hermon-DeKalb and Heuvelton, Morgan Stott sank a pair of free throws and the Demons defended a last gasp chance by HCS for a one-point win.

At Heuvelton, on Thursday evening, in a electrified postseason atmosphere, Logan Tallman drilled a two pointer just inside the arc with 8.1 seconds left and Heuvelton denied H-D’s last bid for a 44-43 win.

After the game both coaches agreed on one subject.

“It’s going to be a wild playoffs,” said Heuvelton coach Rob Powers after his Bulldogs handed the 11-1 NAC West Champion Demons (14-2) their first division loss.

“It was just a great game. We got out early and did some great things and Hermon-DeKalb battled right back. We didn’t have practice yesterday which might have been a blessing because we got our legs back late,” said Powers whose team finished the West season at 10-2 and climbed to 15-2 overall heading into a nonleague game at Canton on Saturday.

Hermon-DeKalb Steve Morrill expressed the same sentiment.

“What a great basketball game. Heuvelton came right out at us but I loved the way we battled and came back which I was most proud of. We had some cold shooters tonight but Bridget Rust’s threes helped us a lot to weather their storm. We had a chance at the end but didn’t execute. It’s a tough loss but we’ll bounce back.”

A early 10-1 run helped Heuvelton take a 12-7 lead in the first quarter and the Bulldogs’ Maddie St. Pierre scored the first five points in the second quarter for a 17-7 lead. The lead was cut to two late as H-D scored the final seven points of the quarter.

In the third quarter, Morgan Stott scored inside to tie the game on the first posession. The Bulldogs eventually lead 35-32 when Macy Richardson scored inside.

The Bulldogs led 36-32 on 1-2 free throws from Olivia St. Pierre but Courtney Harrington scored four to tie the game at 36-36.

With 3:33 left, Stott made it 40-39 but Heuvelton responded with Olivia St. Pierre inside.

Rust nailed a three for a 43-41 lead with 46 seconds left. Olivia St. Pierre made her first of two cutting the deficit to 43-42 with 38.5 seconds left.

Olivia St. Pierre produced a 12 point, nine rebounds, two assist and two steal performance for Heuvelton. Weidner added eight points and two boards, two steals and two assists. Maddie St. Pierre chipped in seven points and seven rebounds. Paige McCormick finished with six points, seven rebounds, and three steals.T allman added seven points, four boards and two assists.

Rust hit five threes in a 17 point effort with four rebounds and two assists for H-D. Courtney Harrington chipped in 13 points, 10 rebounds, four blocks and three assists. Stott added seven points, five rebounds and five assists while Hitchman finished with seven boards, two assists, two steals and four points. Kasey O’Donnell added eight boards, two assists and two steals. Delaney Kerr grabbed four rebounds.

In the JV game, Heuvelton went unbeaten in the NAC West with a 46-27 win. Nathalie Barr scored 11 points, Alex Steele chipped in 10, Kegan Mack tallied nine and Karina Warren added five.

Breanna Harrington scored 14 for H-D and Syndey Harris and Mackenzie Marcellus each scored four.

In one other NAC game on Thursday Hammond downed Morristown 60-25.
