Ogdensburg begins search for new Department of Public Works director

OGDENSBURG — The city is looking for a new Department of Public Works director following the retirement of Kit W. Smith.

Advertisements for the position were posted on the city’s website Thursday in addition to appearing in regional news outlets. Applicants have until 4 p.m. March 28 to respond. The position includes a salary range of $57,677 to $77,518.

The director is responsible for planning and maintaining streets and other city infrastructure, supervising employees and representing the city in labor relations. City Manager John M. Pinkerton said officials are taking their time with the hiring process to find the best candidate.

DPW Supervisor Gregg E. Harland is serving as interim director at a monthly stipend of $750 on top of his normal salary.

“Gregg Harland has done a super job,” Mr. Pinkerton said.

Mayor William D. Nelson said the position will require someone who will be able to get acquainted quickly with the city’s above-ground and underground service systems.

“It’s going to take someone with a lot of knowledge and experience to pick up the ball and run with it,” he said.
