State and town refuse to maintain walkway

Pedestrians are putting their lives in jeopardy trying to walk to businesses and housing on Route 3 in the town of Watertown’s west side.

It is a real shame that the town of Watertown or the NYS DOT can’t maintain the walkway over the Arsenal Street Route 81 bridge during the winter. This effectively blocks any foot traffic from the city of Watertown.

I spoke to both the DOT and a town of Watertown official a couple of years ago and got pretty much the same answer from both of them. There is no regulation that states they have to, and they are not going to. So it is quite evident that they just don’t care about pedestrians.

It is treacherous for all of the people, mostly young people, who have to walk out there to get to work. It also prevents people staying in our west side hotels from walking to all of the stores in the town of Watertown.

I can only imagine a dramatic increase in riders if the city bus system did something innovative like including these outer Arsenal Street businesses in their bus routes.
