Amvets Post collects blankets for soldiers

OGDENSBURG — Amvets Post 19 Auxiliary is keeping soldiers returning from duty warm in their barracks at Fort Drum through its “Bedding for Our Soldiers Project.”

The project began in August, when auxiliary members were looking for ways to help returning soldiers.

“They must purchase their own sheets, pillows and blankets now,” project chairwoman and auxiliary secretary Linda A.M. Hurteau said Friday. “But when they come out of basic training, the last thing they’re thinking about is getting bedding.”

The auxiliary has since donated more than $2,500 worth of bedding and helped well over 200 soldiers, Mrs. Hurteau said.

“We’ve covered a lot of beds, but I like to say we’ve covered a lot of soldiers,” she said.

Auxiliary members have received numerous thank-you notes from soldiers, Mrs. Hurteau said.

“Some of them were using their clothes and covering themselves with their shirts,” she said. “They were very thankful to get them.”

The bedding is purchased in bulk from Walmart. For $250, the auxiliary can purchase a set of sheets, a blanket and a pillow for 20 soldiers.

The group also accepts used bedding.

“We will wash it and tie it with a ribbon for you,” Mrs. Hurteau said.

Amvets Post 19 members recently raised and donated $400 to the Colton Amvets Auxiliary to purchase bedding for its adopted troop.

Auxiliary members said they have made this a continuing project and will be purchasing many more items for soldiers in the future.

“We’ll keep it going until there is no longer a need,” Mrs. Hurteau said.

Caring for veterans and soldiers is the mission of the Amvets Post 19 Ladies Auxiliary, Mrs. Hurteau said.

Donations are accepted at the post, 215 Ford St., Ogdensburg, N.Y. 13669, or to Mrs. Hurteau at 605 Albany Ave., Ogdensburg.
