CANTON -The heating system problem that forced Canton Central School District to close school today has been fixed and classes will resume Tuesday.

School Superintendent William A. Gregory said all after-school and evening activities will be held today as scheduled, including sports practices and the 6 p.m. joint merger committee meeting in the high school library.

On Sunday, a custodian discovered leaks in two fittings for a hot water pipeline. The Hoopsters basketball program was using the gymnasium at the time and Mr. Gregory was working in his office.

The district’s new hot water boiler system is housed in the basement of the building complex where the leaks were found.

As a result, the temperature in the elementary school dropped to 60 degrees Fahrenheit on Sunday when a crew from Northern Mechanicals Inc., Norwood, was called to correct the problem, Mr. Gregory said.

Typically the building complex is kept between 68 and 70 degrees.

“This problem was corrected,” Mr. Gregory said. “Now we’re checking with the manufacturer to see if there’s a problem with the fittings.”

The district’s new hot water heating system was installed last summer. The $6 million project was part of the $15 million capital project approved by district voters in 2012.
