Travelers on Interstate 81 now have access with mobile devices to 81exits.com, a website launched by the 1000 Islands International Tourism Council in cooperation with tourism agencies from Oswego, Onondaga, Cortland and Broome counties.
The website uses geolocation from mobile devices to give exit-by-exit recommendations for gas stations, restaurants and hotels. Using the website on a mobile device, travelers are able to pinpoint their distance from exits with an instant mapping function.
We wanted to create a reliable resource with information provided and updated by the tourism offices and chambers of commerce that service the I-81 corridor, said Gary S. DeYoung, executive director of the tourism council. What separates this product from searchengine results is its simplicity and reliability that the traveler is getting information from the offices charged with providing it.
The launch of the website was the first phase of a state-funded I-81 initiative that will also feature printed brochures and interactive displays at staffed welcome centers. The initiative was funded by a Market NY grant from the state Department of Economic Development.
