Trinity Catholic School unveils new knight mascot

MASSENA - Trinity Catholic School observed Spirit and Pride Day on Tuesday by unveiling their mascot, who will always be watching them from the wall of the school’s dining hall.

A knight that was painted on the wall behind the stage will serve as a reminder of a attributes that should be held by Trinity students, according to Candace O’Neill, Trinity’s advancement director, who led the school in an afternoon pep rally. The painting was unveiled by Principal Kathy Behrens and Assistant Principal Michele Bombard.

“Last summer we decided we wanted to create a mascot for the school,” she said, and the wall painting of the knight was created last week.

She said knights fought bravely, were gentle at heart and gracious in action, were kind and friends to all.

Most importantly, Ms. O’Neill said, knights had faith in God.

“We hope, when you look at the knight, you’ll think about some of those virtues,” she told the students who were dressed in blue and white as part of Tuesday’s celebration of Catholic Schools’ Week.

An actual knight, in the form of student Andrew Cook, was introduced to students as they celebrated the accomplishments of the school’s basketball team. He joined the team members in running into the dining room, through a banner that read “Go TSC Knights.”

Ms. O’Neill said they were using part of their first-ever Catholic Schools’ Week Pep Rally to honor the team members for their work under coaches Eric Pomainville and Tom Oldenburgh.

The pep rally was originally planned to celebrate the team’s final basketball game of the season Tuesday night, she said, but that game was cancelled and the season is now over for the TSC Knights.

“It was a wonderful team. We had a wonderful, wonderful season. It’s sad that it’s over,” Ms. O’Neill said.

Team members included Carson Witkop, Devin Conto, Nick Burke, Sean Murphy, Ethan Miller, Jack Witkop, Trevor Francis, Ty Page, Aidan O’Neill, Mason George, Brendan O’Neill, Sophie Stankovich, Amanda Polarolo, Caroline Cromie, Laura Guimond, Kailey Peets, Emmalyn Ellsworth, Violet Reyes and Hannah Wilson.

Many of those students stepped forward to thank the coaching staff for their work.

“Mr. P and Mr. O are the best basketball coaches ever,” one player said.

“They taught me discipline, they taught me good sportsmanship, they got me in shape,” another told fellow students.

Spirit and Pride Day, a celebration that included dancing as the students entered the dining hall, is just one of a number of events the school is holding during Catholic Schools’ Week.

They began on Saturday with an opening Mass, followed by a pancake breakfast on Sunday. Monday was Mismatch Day, with students and teachers dressed in wacky attire for the day.

Pajama Day returns on Wednesday, along with a student “read-in” and faculty appreciation luncheon.

Thursday is Game Day, with the annual spaghetti dinner and student spelling bee that evening. The spaghetti dinner takes place from 5-7 p.m. The cost is $5 for adults, $4 for students and $15 for a family of four or more. The spelling bee will be held after dinner.

Catholic Schools’ Week wraps up on Valentine’s Day, which will also be Student Appreciation Day. The students will be served their favorite lunch and then take a trip to the St. Mary’s Social Hall for some bingo.

This year our theme for Catholic Schools’ Week is “Trinity Catholic School, 30 years of Faith, Knowledge and Service.”
