Whether the goal is to get a promotion at work, qualify for a job in a new field or qualify for college admission, Jefferson Community College will offer a non-credit workshop to prep for the Test Assessing Secondary Completion, formerly known as the General Educational Development test.
This course is designed to prep people for college, said Andrea C. Pedrick, college coordinator of community services. This class is good for anyone if they have a one day goal of going to college. Youre never too old to learn, and learning can be great fun.
The new exam is the states version of the nationally recognized high school equivalency exam. This will be the first time the college offers a high school equivalency exam prep workshop. The course is designed using a higher level curriculum for reading, writing and math, while typical GED testing is designed for reading levels below eighth grade. The course will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. beginning in March. Participants have the option to take the 14-week course on Monday and Wednesday evenings or on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.
Mrs. Pedrick said the two workshop options will ensure small class sizes, allow for one-on-one attention with the instructor and provide an opportunity to focus on a specific program area.
Before taking the course, people need to take an assessment test so we can work with them and make sure they are ready, Ms. Pedrick said. We want to hold the classes in the extended learning center because its the perfect place for adult learners. They get to come onto the college campus, walk around and talk to people here and see if they are ready for college.
To be eligible for the workshop, adults must no longer be enrolled in high school, possess the ability to learn at an eighth-grade level or higher and have plans to continue their education at a college level.
To register for the workshop, interested students must schedule an appointment with the colleges Learning and Success Center to take the college reading assessment test at no charge. The second step is to call the colleges Continuing Education Division at 786-2438 to register or for more information.
The cost for the course, including all course materials, is $25, which is due at the time of registration.
