ALEXANDRIA BAY — In their first combined meeting to discuss sharing services, officials from the town of Alexandria and the village saw ways they may be able to work together and save money.

The two bodies met Monday night at the town office, County Route 1. Among the changes proposed was combining Planning Board and Zoning Board of Appeals functions into a single body for the two municipalities, which could save the town a couple of thousand dollars each year and help with issues such as finding volunteers.

“It’d definitely be a savings to the town, and we’d appreciate it,” town Supervisor Dale D. Hunneyman said.

The two municipalities also said they could work together on Local Waterfront Revitalization Program planning and at the “Back Nine” walking trail.

“There’s so much we can accomplish together,” village Mayor Danielle L. Jury said.

Beyond those three main proposals, the village and town boards briefly touched on the scope of piping work along Route 12, and cooperation in areas such as public works, dog control, emergency services, recreational activities and event operations in the village.

Following the meeting, Ms. Jury pointed out that in the past, such a meeting might not have been possible. Now, she said, the two local entities are able to quickly find some areas on which they agree.

“Everybody brings something to the table,” she said. “I think we’ve got a really nice group.”

The meeting itself had been delayed for years, Mr. Hunneyman and Ms. Jury said, because of scheduling difficulties and vacancies in the respective boards.

The two will plan a follow-up meeting to continue the discussion on sharing services.
