Father of convicted killer pleads guilty to attempted bribery

CANTON — The father of convicted killer Dustin J. Trimm pleaded guilty Tuesday in St. Lawrence County Court to attempting to bribe a witness in his son’s murder trial.

Stephen Trimm, 65, Winthrop, originally was facing charges of felony bribing of a witness, fifth-degree conspiracy and fourth-degree criminal solicitation.

In a deal with District Attorney Mary E. Rain, the elder Mr. Trimm pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of felony first-degree attempted bribery.

In March or April, before his son’s trial was to begin, Mr. Trimm allegedly paid $1,500 to Robert McConnell, owner of the Norfolk property where the body of Jason M. Wing, 21, was found by state police investigators Feb. 1, 2012, in an effort to prevent him from testifying against his son.

The younger Trimm shot Mr. Wing in the head and chest and buried his body in a wooded area off Grantville Road. He pleaded guilty in April to one count of first-degree manslaughter in the Aug. 31, 2010, death of Mr. Wing.

Mr. Trimm told Mr. McConnell that his son’s defense didn’t need to prove him innocent; it just had to create reasonable doubt in the prosecution’s case.

Mr. Trimm also arranged a meeting between the witness and a private investigator.

Under the plea deal, Mr. Trimm would be sentenced to no more than six months in St. Lawrence County jail and five years’ probation, Ms. Rain said.

Mr. Trimm was released under continued probation supervision and is to be sentenced on April 7.
