Section 3 basketball pairings released; Copenhagen girls draw top seed

The Copenhagen girls basketball team claimed the only top seed among Frontier League schools in the Section 3 tournament pairings released today. But four other Frontier League girls teams and one boys team grabbed No. 2 seeds in the tourney, scheduled to start Friday.

The Copenhagen girls (15-2) are ranked No. 1 in the Class D brackets and received a bye. The Golden Knights will play the winner of Friday’s game between No. 8 Cincinnatus and No. 9 DeRuyter on Tuesday.

The South Jefferson girls (18-0), who made the section finals last season, received the No. 2 seed behind No. 1 Sherburne-Earlville in the Class B tournament. The Spartans play host to No. 15 Cazenovia on Friday night.

The Indian River girls (15-3) received the No. 2 seed in Class A. After a bye, the Warriors take on the winner of Friday’s game between No. 7 East Syracuse-Minoa and No. 10 Oneida on Tuesday in Philadelphia.

The Thousand Islands girls (15-3) are No. 2 in Class C and play host to No. 15 West Canada Valley on Saturday.

In the boys tournament, Sackets Harbor picked up the No. 2 seed in Class D. The Patriots (15-3) are scheduled to host No. 15 Faith Heritage on Friday.

In other Class D boys games, No. 8 Lyme (11-7) is slated to host No. 9 Tyburn Academy on Saturday in the first round. No. 14 Copenhagen (7-10) is scheduled to play at No. 3 McGraw on Friday.

In Class A boys, Carthage (17-1) captured the No. 3 seed behind No. 1 Jamesville-DeWitt and No. 2 Bishop Ludden. The Comets received a bye and will host No. 6 Camden on Tuesday. Indian River is the No. 9 seed and faces No. 8 Syracuse Fowler on Friday.

In Class B, South Jefferson (8-10) took the No. 12 seed and plays at No. 5 Cazenovia on Friday. Lowville (6-12) landed the No. 15 seed and faces Sherburne-Earlville on Friday.

Sandy Creek (16-2) won the No. 3 seed in the Class C boys tournament. The Comets are to host No. 14 and fellow Frontier League team Thousand Islands (9-9) on Friday. Immaculate Heart Central (13-5) received the No. 5 seed and hosts No. 12 Westmoreland on Friday. South Lewis received the No. 8 seed and faces No. 9 Weedsport on Friday.

In other girls tournament games, Carthage (10-8) won the No. 5 seed in Class A and after a bye will face No. 4 Camden on Tuesday.

In Class B, General Brown (11-7) is seeded No. 11 and is scheduled to play at No. 6 Bishop Grimes on Friday.

In Class C, No. 12 Beaver River (7-9) plays at No. 5 Cooperstown on Friday. No. 16 IHC (5-12) faces top-seeded Little Falls on Saturday.

In Class D, the Lyme girls (12-5) received the No. 5 seed and are scheduled to play No. 13 Otselic Valley in a Saturday doubleheader with the Lyme boys on Saturday.

Alexandria (9-8) won the No. 7 seed and a Friday hosting date with Frontier League rival Sackets Harbor (6-11), which is seeded 10th.

Championships for all boys classes are scheduled for March 1 at the Carrier Dome. Girls championships are slated for Feb. 28 at the Dome.
