Alec A. Cooke

AKWESASNE – Mr. Alec A. Cooke, 88, of 1068 Drum Street Road, passed away Wednesday morning, February 12, 2014 at Massena Memorial Hospital, where he had been patient for the past week.

Alec was born June 17, 1925 in Akwesasne, the son of the late Louis and Nancy McDonald Cook. He attended schools on the reservation and later achieved his GED through Operation Recognition. On August 14, 1945, he entered the US Army, serving for a time in Germany during World War II. Alec was honorably discharged on January 29, 1947. Alec married Louise Wood on November 29, 1952 at the St. Regis Catholic Church with Rev. Michael Jacobs, officiating. Louise predeceased him on October 6, 2010.

Alec was a laborer for Local Laborer’s Union #322 for many years until his retirement. He was a member of the Andrew W. Cook American Legion Post #1479 and a communicant of St. Regis Catholic Church. Alec was also a woodworker and a skilled cabinetmaker. He also enjoyed mowing his lawn, playing cards, watching hockey, doing Search-a-Word puzzles, and playing radio bingo. But perhaps his great enjoyments were the weekly Sunday dinners and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Alec is survived by his four children, Rod and Karen Cook of Massena; Gail Cooke and her companion, Rick; Mark and Maryellen Cooke; and Roger and Julie Cooke, all of Akwesasne; a chosen son, Robert and Verity Lattrelle of South Burlington; 11 grandchildren, Chanel, Jonelle, Patrick, Beau, Tom, Alison, Kelly, Jeff, Kyle, Erin, and Christopher; two great granddaughters, Makenna and Autumn; his sister, Florence Wilson, Port Henry, NY; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Abe and Peter Cook; and his sister, Theresa Phillips.

Friends may call at his home beginning Thursday 4:00 PM until 10:00 AM Saturday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday 11:00 AM at St. Regis Catholic Church with Rev. Anthony Osuji, celebrating. Spring burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Akwesasne.

Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Hogansburg/Akwesasne Ambulance Service.

Arrangements are with the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena, where condolences may be made online at
