A town of Pamelia man has been indicted on allegations that he caused grave risk of death to a newborn child by striking the infant numerous times, breaking the infant’s skull.

Willie D. Smith III, 27, is charged with first- and second-degree assault, first-degree reckless endangerment and endangering the welfare of a child. The charges were contained in a grand jury indictment handed up Thursday in Jefferson County Court.

It is alleged that between March 13, which is the child’s date of birth, and May 13 he created risk of death to the boy by physically abusing him, causing broken bones, bruises and scarring. Police said at the time of the incident that the child suffered fractures to both of his arms and legs.It is further alleged that he struck the child in the head with his fists, causing fractures to the child’s skull and bleeding and swelling on the infant’s brain.
