TOWN OF NORWAY – Jay Earl Sickler, 91, of Military Road, Newport, died on February 11, 2014 at the Masonic Care Community, Utica, where he was a patient for the past week.

Mr. Sickler was born on January 4, 1923 in Utica, a son of the late Jay E. and Mabel (Penner) Sickler. He graduated from Ilion High School and furthered his education at Utica College. On February 28, 1942, Jay was united in marriage with the former Marcia J. Weakley in Mohawk. He was employed as a Manufacturing Engineer at the former Univac, Utica, for 38 years. Marcia preceded him in death on April 15, 2005.

A Mason for 61 years, Jay joined Mohawk Valley Lodge #276 F. & A.M. and later affiliated with Newport Lodge #455 F. & A.M. He was currently still active with the Lodge and was the recipient of the Dedicated Service Award in 1989, an honor he well deserved. Jay was of the Methodist faith and a member of the former Russia Grange.

Survivors include one son, David Sickler of Ogdensburg; two grandsons, James (Ellen) Sickler of Amherst, NH and Jeffrey (Karen) Sickler of Milford, NH; two granddaughters, Laurel Sickler of Burlington, VT and Rachel Sickler of Barre, VT; seven great-grandchildren, Shannon, Ryan, Jacob, Kayla, James and Kassandra Sickler and Tucker Mitchell; and many nieces and nephews of the Weakley family. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a son, James; and his sister, Mary Sickler.

Funeral services will be held at the Autenrith Funeral Home, Newport on Friday at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Deborah Waldron, Pastor of the Newport United Methodist Church, officiating. Spring interment will take place in Newport Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home are Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. Newport Masonic Lodge will conduct their ritualistic service on Thursday at 6:45 p.m.

Memorials may be made to the Masonic Brotherhood Fund or Shriners Hospitals for Children. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
