A funeral for 81-year old Mrs. Marilyn R. Scanlon will be held Saturday, February 15, 2014 at 1:30 PM at the Seymour Funeral Home in Potsdam with Pastor Lee Sweeney officiating. A spring burial will be in St. Marys Cemetery in Potsdam. Friends may call at the Seymour Funeral Home on Friday, February 14 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. Mrs. Scanlon died February 11, 2014 at United Helpers Maplewood in Canton. She was a resident of Hannawa Falls, NY.
Survivors include her husband Lawrence Larry Scanlon of Hannawa Falls, two daughters Tawnee M. (and her husband Scott) Searles of Potsdam, Laurie L. Scanlon of Key Largo, FL, four granddaughters: Amanda Kempf of Ithaca, NY, Carlee Waack of Key Largo, FL, Shannon and Breanna Searles, both of Potsdam, two grandsons: Martin Waack of Key Largo, FL, Colin Searles of Potsdam, a sister, Mrs. Gene (Shirley) Snyder of Hannawa Falls, NY, one brother, Robert Stone of Potsdam, a sister-in-law Sara Stone of Potsdam, and several nieces and nephews.
Marilyn was predeceased by two sisters: Jane McEwen and Dorothy Vanderburg, and a brother, Richard Stone.
Marilyn was born in the Town of Pierrepont, NY on November 28, 1932 the daughter of Carl and Ruth Eleanor (Howard) Stone. She received a Masters degree from St. Lawrence University in School Administration. Marilyns 35-year career in education began with her teaching in the elementary grades. Her passion for her students made her the advocate for many youngsters. Marilyn later became a guidance counselor at Potsdam Central School.
She marred Lawrence M. Scanlon on July 23, 1955 in Potsdam. Marilyn was a member of the New York State Retired Teachers Association, and a former member of the Potsdam Zonta Club.
A memorial scholarship fund is being established in Marilyns name for students at Potsdam Central School. If friends desire donations may be made payable to Potsdam Central School and sent to 29 Leroy Street, Potsdam, NY 13676. Note that you should mark Marilyn Scanlon Scholarship Fund on your check memo.
