CANTON — Evan LaPoint scored 21 points and grabbed 18 rebounds as the No. 4 Canton boys basketball team used a strong second half to defeat No. 5 Gouverneur 50-45 in a Section 10 Class B first-round game Thursday night.

Canton (8-10 overall) will travel to face top-seeded Ogdensburg Free Academy in a semifinal at 6 p.m. Wednesday. The game was tied 21-21 at halftime but Canton went on an 18-10 run in the third quarter to pull away from the Wildcats (6-12).

Scott Wight added 11 points and seven rebounds for Canton and Ryan Caldwell scored six.. Curt LaPlant scored 17 points and went 6-6 from the foul line to lead Gouverneur and Devin Cox tallied 16.

CLASS C B-M 77, N-N 24

The No. 2 Panthers built a 42-6 lead by halftime to easily defeat No. 3 Norwood-Norfolk (3-16) in a Class C semifinal in Brushton.

Brushton-Moira (10-8) will face No. 1 Tupper Lake in the championship at 1 p.m. on Feb. 22 at SUNY Canton.

Adam Martin scored 27 points to lead the Panthers and Alex Burnett tossed in 18. Travis Gay led Norwood-Norfolk with nine points.

TUPPER LAKE 59, ST. LAWRENCE 29

The top-seeded Lumberjacks outscored No. 4 St. Lawrence Central 13-0 in the second quarter to build a 30-14 halftime lead.

Anson Gagnier scored 14 points to lead Tupper Lake. Mitch Keniston tallied 12 and Roger Delair supplied 11. Josh White led the Larries (2-17) with eight points.
