A water main break on Elm Street has shut down water service to the street and the 1200 block of Sherman Street.

David O’Brien, a crew chief with the city’s water department, said it is expected that service will be restored by the end of the day. Crews were waiting to start digging at about noon until it could be determined where an adjacent gas line was located.

Elm Street is temporarily closed to traffic from Washington Street to Sherman Street and on Sherman Street from Chestnut Street to Barben Avenue.

Mr. O’Brien said Monday’s break is unrelated to two previous breaks in the block of Sherman Street where Sherman Street School is located. He said cold temperatures are to blame for a slew of recent water line breaks.

“We’ve been flat out,” he said. “We’ve had probably 12 breaks in the past three weeks.”
