Massena Village Board expected to adopt burning regulations

MASSENA - Mayor James F. Hidy said he’s expecting village board members to adopt the proposed recreational burning regulations following a public hearing at 5:30 p.m. tonight.

When asked if he was expecting the new law to be adopted Tuesday night, he replied, “I would hope so.”

Mr. Hidy noted that with fire pits available for sale at local retailers and many people already holding recreational fires, it made sense to pass a law making them legal, while also giving people some guidelines to ensure their own safety.

“A lot of people are doing them anyhow,” he said. “This will make it legal for them and give people the ability to enjoy their backyard once again, while also having guidelines in place for safety.”

The proposed law comes after months of discussion that was initiated by the fire department, whose career fighters are now also responsible for code enforcement duties.

“Basically the way we feel (is that) they’re out there. Any summer night you can go for a walk and you can smell them,” Foreman Ken McGowan said when he proposed the changes to the code last month. “What we want to see, if the village is going to allow it, let’s put something in place so they’re done safely - give the people some guidelines.”

Mr. Hidy said to date, most of the reaction to the proposal has been positive, noting that he has only heard from one person who was opposed to the law.

The hearing will be followed by the village’s regularly scheduled board meeting.
