OGDENSBURG — An Ogdensburg man is accused of leading state police on a chase that reached speeds of over 100 miles per hour and put several motorists in danger Sunday morning.

Troopers say they clocked Rickie D. Lawton, 22, of 131 Patterson St., at 86 miles per hour in a Lincoln Continental traveling west on Route 37 at about 10:45 a.m. The speed limit on that stretch of the highway is 55 mph.

When troopers began pursuit, they said, Mr. Lawton increased his speed to 106 miles per hour and ran a red light at the intersection with Ford Street Extension.

Troopers said he used the shoulder of the highway to pass two vehicles that were stopped at the traffic light at the intersection.

State police said he then passed two more vehicles in a no-passing zone and forced oncoming traffic onto the shoulder of the road.

Troopers said Mr. Lawton then turned onto Park Street and sped at 49 miles per hour, forcing another vehicle off the street. He finally turned into the parking lot of the Ogdensburg City Police Department and got out of the vehicle.

He was taken into custody without further incident after the 1.6-mile chase. No one else was in the car.

Inside the station, Mr. Lawton complained of chest pains due to a panic attack, troopers said. He was taken to Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center, where he was evaluated and admitted, police said.

Troopers charged him with second-degree reckless endangerment, reckless driving and third-degree fleeing an officer in a motor vehicle, all misdemeanors. He was additionally charged with unlawful possession of marijuana and speeding.

He was issued tickets returnable to Ogdensburg City Court.
