Six sent to hospitals following head-on crash in Pamelia

Six people were sent to hospitals after two pickup trucks were involved in a head-on accident Monday night on Route 11 in the town of Pamelia.

State police were investigating the cause of the accident after the two pickups collided at about 7:40 p.m. just north of the Bush Road intersection. Both vehicles ended up in the middle of the highway, with their front ends smashed in.

The identities of the three adults and three children were not known at the scene.

Two adults were transported by medical helicopters to Upstate Medical University, Syracuse. One of them was in critical condition, suffering from a fractured femur, said Northpole Fire Chief Joseph Wargo.

The other four people were taken by ambulance to Samaritan Medical Center.

Details of their injuries were not available.

Volunteer firefighters arrived within two minutes of the call because they were training at the nearby Northpole station. Before first responders arrived, other motorists helped one of the injured while he was lying in the road, the fire chief said.

While the ages of the children were not known Monday night, car seats were inside one of the pickups, Chief Wargo said.

Road conditions did not appear to be factor in the crash since the highway was “cold and dry” and not icy, Chief Wargo said. Accident reconstruction investigators were at the scene.

The road was closed for more than 90 minutes while the scene was cleared.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department and Calcium Fire Department also responded to the scene.
