Lisbon Fire Department accepts bids for new roof

LISBON - The Lisbon Volunteer Fire Department is hoping to repair its station’s aging roof this spring, and will open contractor bids March 13 for the project.

Department Board of Commissioners Chairman James “Rusty” Darcy said the project has been a long time coming.

“We can’t patch the old one anymore,” Mr. Darcy said.

He said that when it rains, water pours into the station and in some places comes dangerously close to electrical hardware.

This winter, Mr. Darcy said, the department was forced to patch parts of the roof with plastic.

Mr. Darcy said the roof is the original to the building, which was built in the 1960s.

“It’s just rotten,” he said.

In order to fix the roof, Mr. Darcy said, the department is looking to have a rubber membrane installed overtop insulation.

A totally new roof was “way out of the question,” Mr. Darcy said.

“We’re hoping to keep it under $30,000,” he said.

With regular maintenance, Mr. Darcy said, the department is hoping to have the new covering last for at least 20 years.

Depending on the specifics of the bid they finally approve, Mr. Darcy said he expects to have a 12-year labor warranty and a 20-year material warranty associated with the project.

In order to fund the project, the department agreed to a $35,000, five-year bond in November.

Mr. Darcy said the district considered applying for grants to fix the roof, but ultimately decided against it.

“We looked at the necessity of having the repair versus sitting around and hoping for a grant,” Mr. Darcy said.

Bids on the project must be postmarked by March 6. Specifications can be requested by writing to the district secretary at 15 Church St., Lisbon, 13658.

Mr. Darcy said the department hopes to have the project completed by June 1.
