Even though Relay for Life is still four months out, John F. Miller is thinking ahead to fundraising for the event which aids cancer research.

For the 2014 relay, Mr. Miller hopes to beat his own effort last year by raising more than $7,000 for the event – that’s $725 more than he raised in 2013.

Inspired by the death of his brother, who passed away due to cancer on New Year’s Day in 2013, Mr. Miller took up Relay for Life’s cause and plans on raffling off $200 in scratch-off lottery tickets and $100 in cash. Last year Mr. Miller sold $150 in scratch-off tickets and $100 in cash. He said he hopes that the increased incentive will help him beat last year’s total.

Mr. Miller will be selling raffle tickets until the drawing on May 27.

Besides raffle tickets, Mr. Miller is also selling 400 bracelets reading “faith, hope, love” at $2 each to help support Relay for Life.

“If people want to purchase a raffle ticket and bracelet I’m going to be selling them outside of Wal-Mart starting this Sunday and Monday until a week before the drawing,” Mr. Miller said.

Raffle tickets are $3 each or $5 for two.

The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life is an overnight fundraising walk that supports the society’s cancer research and advocacy.

In Ogdensburg the event will be held at Ogdensburg Free Academy on June 20 at 6 p.m. More information can be found at www.relayforlife.org.

Mr. Miller will be outside the Ogdensburg Wal-Mart on Sundays and Mondays from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Anyone who wants to purchase raffle tickets or bracelets at a different time can contact Mr. Miller at 355-1676.
