HOGANSBURG A Hogansburg-Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department captain is accused of stealing nearly $6,000 from the department.
State police at 12:30 p.m. Monday charged Ryan J. McDonald, 24, Hogansburg, with third-degree grand larceny and second-degree forgery, both felonies.
Troopers responded to a report of theft from the Route 37 firehouse in Bombay at 12:50 p.m. Feb. 12. Fire Chief Derek B. Comins told police that a monthly audit determined a total of $5,985.31 was missing.
Mr. McDonald allegedly was cashing checks made out to himself and forging the signatures of other members, state police spokeswoman Trooper Jennifer V. Fleishman said. As captain, Mr. McDonald had access to the departments checking account to pay its miscellaneous expenses.
Allegedly, a portion of the funding was used to make a vehicle payment, Trooper Fleishman said. Police are still investigating where the rest of the funds had been spent.
Chief Comins could not be reached for comment.
Mr. McDonald was arraigned in the Fort Covington Town Court and was released under probation supervision. He is scheduled to appear at Bombay Town Court.
