Labor Department announces grants totaling $150m to help the long-term unemployed

The federal Department of Labor announced today grants totaling $150 million to help those who have been out of work for six months or longer to return to work in “middle- and high-skill jobs.”

In a news release, the department said approximately 20 to 30 grants ranging from $3 million to $10 million will be awarded to worker training programs — such as on-the-job training, paid work experience, paid internships and registered apprenticeships that “facilitate hiring for jobs where employers currently use foreign workers” on non-immigrant H-1B visas.

U.S. Secretary of Labor Thomas E. Perez announced the “Ready to Work Partnership” grants Wednesday afternoon from the Pulaski headquarters of Fulton Companies, a global manufacturer of industrial and commercial heating systems.

The grant program was established through a partnership between private employers, nonprofit organizations and the public workforce system.
