POTSDAM - The landscape of high school basketball in Northern New York changed dramatically in the 1974-75 season.

League playoffs were discontinued and the Section 10 Tournament produced the postseason champions by class for both boys and girls.

When the state tournament was founded, the class champions advanced to regional play.

Through cooperation and coordination between the Section 10 Boys and Girls Basketball Chairpersons, the tournament grew into a model of efficiency and popularity. Being the only section in the state which crowns overall Class A-B-C-D Champions, the night of the crossover semi-finals has provided an ideal venue for the presentation of All Northern Conference Boys and Girls Basketball Awards.

“Our tournament is well respected statewide and over the years state officials have come to watch our championship games and have always come away impressed,” said Section 10 Athletic Coordinator Carl Normandin.

“The coordination of the schedules between boys and girls basketball has made it a great success.”

On March 1st when the Section 10 Basketball Tournament crowns its overall boys and girls champions, it will also celebrate its 40th anniversary.

A committee was formed last year to take on the huge undertaking and they have planned a landmark event for March 1 at SUNY Potsdam’s Maxcy Hall.

The girls championship game will start at noon followed by a recognition ceremony for the coaches and players on every boys and girls class championship team, Northern Conference award recipients, Joe Jukoski and Jan Reetz Award recipients former officials, basketball chairpersons, tournament volunteers and everyone who made contributions of the tournament.

The individuals in attendance will be announced and called to the floor of the gym by school.

The recognition ceremony will be followed by a social gathering at the SUNY Potsdam Fieldhouse.

The boys championship game will be played at 4 p.m. and following that game a reception for all involved with be held at Maxfield’s in Potsdam.

“We are hoping that all former players, coaches, officials and everyone who deserves to be recognized will attend,” said Jerry Smilgin of the 40th Anniversary of Section 10 Basketball Committee.

“We are asking the athletic directors and coaches at all of the schools to get the word out and encourage people to come.”

Everyone planning to attend should register on-line with Ken Cring at kennethcring@gmail.com.

All those pre-registering will have their name included in a program. Tables will also be set up at the venues of this season’s tournament games so people can sign up.

People can also sign up on March 1 and they will be announced. But they will not be listed in the program.
