SCHENECTADY It was another tough evening for the Clarkson University mens hockey team at Union Colleges Messa Rink.
The Dutchmen used a three-goal second period to knock off Clarkson 5-0 in an ECAC Hockey game Friday night. Union (21-6-4 overall, 15-3-1 ECAC Hockey) clinched the regular-season championship with the win and Clarkson fell from fourth place to sixth place in the conference standings.
It was Unions eighth straight win over Clarkson (17-14-2, 10-9) in the building. In the last six wins over Clarkson at Messa Rink the Dutchmen have outscored the Golden Knights 40-7.
I thought they were better than us tonight, Clarkson coach Casey Jones said. They had some puck luck and they generated that by crashing the net hard. You look at some of the habits they have for generating goals, they get pucks to the net and they make it uncomfortable for your goalie. We have to take a little bit of that and implement it ourselves. We had (nine) shots through two periods and thats not going to cut it on the road. When you are not scoring you have to get some ugly goals.
Union scored its first goal at 13 minutes, 25 seconds of the first period while shorthanded on a controversial play. Clarkson defenseman Kevin Tansey lost his footing and knocked his own net loose. Unions Dale Ciampini shot after the net was dislodged and scored.
The Dutchmen put the game out of reach with a three-goal second period, with the first two goals deflecting off a Clarkson skate and stick.
Ciampini scored again at 8:17 and then Jeff Taylor scored at 12:04 to make it 2-0. Shayne Gostisbehere scored a power-play goal at 15:22 to extend Unions lead to 4-0.
The Dutchmen closed out the scoring with a goal from Mike Vecchione at 15:41 of the final period. Colin Stevens finished with 20 saves for the shutout.
For Clarkson it was the second shutout in three games. The Golden Knights have only scored one goal in the last three games.
Their (defense) was extremely good tonight, Jones said. We were missing nets (on shots) in the first. We were trying to get pucks to the point. Were going to continue to work hard to try to generate (offense). I didnt think we generated a ton of good scoring chances tonight and Union had a lot to do with that.
