CANTON — All three number one seeds survived title tests Friday night in a Section 10 girls basketball championship tripleheader at SUNY Canton.

St. Lawrence Central defeated No. 2 Brushton-Moira 41-30 in the Class C game to start the tripleheader.

Heuvelton edged No. 2 Hermon-DeKalb 53-48 in overtime in the Class D final and Canton defeated No. 2 Ogdensburg Free Academy 59-38 in the Class B contest.

Up next for the champions is the Section 10 overall semifinals on Tuesday night at SUNY Potsdam.

Canton will play Heuvelton at 5 p.m. and Class A champion Malone will meet St. Lawrence Central at 7 p.m.

All three teams Friday also will participate in the state playoffs against teams to be determined next week.

HEUVELTON 53, HERMON-DEKALB 48 (OT)

Heuvelton (19-2 overall) found itself in a 30-23 hole against Hermon-DeKalb at halftime in the third matchup of the season for the two Northern Athletic Conference West Division foes.

The Bulldogs used a 14-5 third quarter advantage, finishing on a 6-0 run, for a 37-35 lead. After Heuvelton led 43-39 with just under three minutes on a key basket from Kylie Piercey, the Demons (16-3) chipped away and cut the deficit to 43-42 with three straight free throws from Hunter Hitchman with 2 minutes, 25 seconds left.

Piercey hit a back end of two free throws with 42 seconds left for a 44-42 lead, but Courtney Harrington sent the game into overtime with two free throws with 15 seconds left.

The Bulldogs outscored Hermon-DeKalb 9-4 in overtime for their first title since 2005.

During the overtime, Heuvelton’s Alexis Weidner scored in transition, Paige McCormick connected off a turnover, and Kylie Piercey grabbed a big rebound setting up Logan Tallman for one of two at the foul line just before McCormick recorded a steal and was fouled and made one free throw for the 6-0 run.

“At halftime, Coach (Rob) Powers kept reminding us to play as a team and work harder defensively,” said McCormick, who scored 21 points. “It was a tough battle the whole way and against a very good team. I’m just thrilled that we won and are moving on.”

Maddie St. Pierre added 10 points including six in the second quarter.

Hitchman scored eight of her 15 points in the second quarter and Courtney Harrington also scored 15 points for the Demons.

“Credit Heuvelton they played an exceptional second half and their defense was extremely tough,” Demons coach Steve Morrill said. “We turned the ball over too much late in the game and we came away with two many scoreless trips.”

CANTON 59, OFA 38

Friday’s win was the second straight Section 10 title for Canton (16-4), which won Class C last year.

“We knew that if we were going to win tonight it would be with defense,” Golden Bears coach Mike Meyers. “We had to focus on not letting Meg Dodge and Riley Luckie get started. They are outstanding players but we did an outstanding job defending and helping out when Riley and Meg drove to the basket. We definitely played our best defensive game of the season.”

Emily Pinckney, who grabbed seven of her 11 rebounds in the first half, tallied six points in the first quarter when the Golden Bears took a 16-10 lead and Kali Frank, who scored 16 points, buried three 3-point baskets in the second quarter, igniting a 17-5 run.

Tori Daley tallied 13 points with 10 rebounds and three steals for the Bears. Pinckney also finished with a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Rachel Sanderson netted 10 points through the first three quarters.

“We had a great season and this was just a great bunch to work with,” Blue Devils coach Lynn Blevins said. “I was very proud of the way they just kept playing hard even we fell behind by quite a bit, Canton played extremely well and they do all the little things that it takes to win championships.”

OFA ends the season with a 12-7 record.

ST. LAWRENCE 41, BRUSHTON-MOIRA 30

The win over the Panthers earned St. Lawrence Central (13-6) its first Section 10 championship.

“We came here ready to play and excited to play for a championship. We were ready to make history,” said senior forward Lindsey Thayer.

“This feel really good,” said coach Chad Gauthier, who has now guided the Larries to the Class C final in each of his first two years at the helm. “After getting to this game last year, we were happy to get here again and the girls were ready to play. They had a good year but they had their hearts set on winning this one today. This is just a great night for St. Lawrence girls basketball.”

Thayer finished with a game-high 12 points along with nine rebounds, five assists, four steals and three blocks as the Larries answered the opening basket by Brushton-Moira sophomore Kirstin Barrett with 11 straight points en-route to building a 13-5 lead by the end of the first quarter.

Points were just as hard to come by in the second quarter where SLC pushed its lead to 18-5 with five unanswered points over the first 6:47. The teams then traded baskets over the final minute and the Larries went into halftime leading 22-10.

After taking their biggest lead of the game when Thayer opened the fourth quarter with a field goal, the Larries weathered the first of two second-half runs by the Panthers (11-7).
