SYRACUSE — Sophomore Kammikia Barnes came up short on a deep and desperate 3-point field goal attempt as time expired and second-seeded Indian River lost to No. 6 Whitesboro, 46-45, in an intense Section 3 Class A girls basketball semifinal game Saturday at Onondaga Community College’s Allyn Hall Gymnasium.

Maria Lapertosa led all scorers with 23 points and scored the game-winning basket with 13.2 seconds left for Whitesboro (11-9), which will advance to Thursday’s championship game at the Carrier Dome to play top-seeded Jamesville-DeWitt.

Junior Talesia Jackson scored 13 points and Barnes added 12 for Indian River (16-4).

In a later sectional semifinal game, the Carthage boys basketball team fell to Bishop Ludden, 62-48, in Class A.

Carthage (18-2) was outscored 17-4 in the second quarter. Dan Kaigler scored 23 points for Bishop Ludden (18-2).
