Pond Hockey Classic goes despite thaw

A February thaw left standing water on the rinks at the Ogdensburg City Marina forcing the first day of the St. Lawrence River Pond Hockey Classic indoors to OFA’s Edgar Newell Memorial Golden Dome.

But it didn’t dampen the spirits of the organizers of the first annual event which is part of the Ogdensburg River Shiver winter festival.

“We would all really love to be out on the river today but we have a good setup here and everyone seems to be having a good time,” said City Councilor Billy Hosmer of the organizing committee. “It’s supposed to get colder overnight so hopefully tomorrow’s action will be staged on the river.”

The action was fast-paced and continuous on Saturday three rinks at the dome where Moose Jaw, the Brain Stormers, Eddie Shore, Ogdensburg Bowl, Moose Knuckle, Lucky Puckers, the Backdoor Bandits and the Ogdensburg Leafs played in the Open Division and Fantasy Dream, the Bulldogs, Team Lisbon, Puck Dynasty and McLear’s competed in the Rec Division.

Today’s schedule will begin with an opening ceremony at 8 a.m. followed by youth games and the start of the second day of the tournament at 9:30 a.m. Other event attractions include vendors and an outdoor skating area for families.

“We had over 30 teams signed up but some didn’t make the trip because of the weather,” said Mike Fennessy of the organizing committee.

“We are looking forward to it getting cold over night so the games can be played on the river tomorrow.”

The Ogdensburg Hockey League teamed up with corporate sponsors A.J. Missert, Hosmer’s Marina, and the Ogdensburg Chamber of Commerce to host the event which is presented by Coors Light.

The proceeds of the tournament benefit the Ogdensburg Boys and Girls Club, Ogdensburg Minor Hockey and the Ogdensburg Chamber of Commerce.
