Fort Covington officials look for ways to improve town garage heating

FORT COVINGTON — The town is working with John Carr of Blue Mountain Engineering to improve the highway garage after Highway Superintendent Gerard F. Leroux made an impassioned request in November for warmer working conditions for Highway Department employees. The building originally was meant for cold storage, with air vents in the roof and thin insulation, Mr. Carr said. Strong drafts also blow through the entrance.

“You might as well throw your money right out the window,” he said.Mr. Carr priced 6-inch foam insulated panels for the walls, but discovered that materials alone would cost about $100,000. He is exploring other options, such as using spray foam and drywall to insulate, partitioning the area into smaller heated and unheated spaces or building a heated addition where workers could warm up.

Mr. Carr said the addition may be the town’s best option because full renovation would be too costly, shutting down a building constantly in use would be inconvenient and multiple rooms would lower fire risk.
