RECKLESS ENDANGERMENT - MASSENA - A 21-year-old Massena man was jailed early Monday morning after he grabbed a chainsaw and started revving it while he was allegedly arguing with his girlfriend.

Village police charged Andrew J. Brewer of 2 Riverview St., Apt. 2, Massena, with second-degree reckless endangerment at 10:22 p.m. Sunday. He was arraigned by Massena Village Police Eric J. Gustafson and sent to the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility with bail set at $750 cash.

His girlfriend, Trisha Harmer, in a statement she provided police, said she was not sure what prompted the incident.

“All of a sudden, without reason, Andrew had a violent outburst that made him mad. I think that it was something that his mother had said to him. Andrew’s mother came in the room and tried to talk to him,”Ms. Harmer told police.

“Andrew then grabbed a chainsaw and started it up. We were only about a foot apart. He was near the closet, and I was sitting on the bed. Andrew started revving the engine, and it was scaring me. I started screaming,” she said, noting another resident of the home told her to get out of the room.

Brewer’s sister, who told police it was fairly common for her brother to start the chainsaw inside the residence, said she called police when she heard his girlfriend screaming.

Brewer said his girlfriend got mad at him for rejecting a romantic advance. “... so I did something stupid that I really shouldn’t have done,” he noted in his statement to police.

“I got mad and started up the chainsaw and revved it up while I was still on the bed with her. Trisha got scared and ran out of the room crying. I scared the crap out of her. I started the saw, but I wasn’t really going to do anything with it. I have started the chainsaw in the house before but I think she was scared because I was so close to her,” he added in his statement, noting he had told police to take his chainsaws when they responded to the residence.
