Ogdensburg City Council unanimously supported a resolution backing an effort spearheaded by state Sen. Patricia A. Ritchie, R-Heuvelton, to turnover 160 acres of land on Airy Point to the city for development.

The effort, which is also supported by Assemblywoman Addie J. Russell, D-Theresa, would see the surplus land on the state-owned St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center campus put back on the city tax base.

According to the resolution, “The transfer of the land to the city would result in the development of the property and stimulate the local economy.”

The resolution notes that the city would have a greater incentive to redevelop the land than the state.

Mayor William D. Nelson said the plan “could be a win-win all the way around” as it not only beefs up the city’s tax base but it could pave the way for job creation. The land, which doesn’t include any contaminated soil or buildings that cannot be easily repurposed, could potentially be turned in industrial and residential property with some of the land located directly along the St. Lawrence River.

City Manager John M. Pinkerton said that would be the only waterfront land in the city that is undeveloped and uncontaminated.

City Councilor Wayne L. Ashley said, “This is an opportunity that we can’t let slip through our fingers.”

The resolution was sent to north country lawmakers and Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo.
