State reports 60.1 million visitors to its parks in 2013

More than 60.1 million people visited state parks in 2013, according to numbers released Wednesday.

The numbers were a slight decline from 2012’s approximately 60.3 million visitors. The state noted part of that decline was connected to closures stemming from Superstorm Sandy.

Among the parks with increased attendance were Allegany, Niagara Falls, Letchworth, Watkins Glen, Green Lakes, Saratoga Spa and Bear Mountain State Parks.

The state said the 583,016 overnight stays at Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation campgrounds was a record, surpassing the 578,428 overnight stays in 2012.

The state also reported major spending in parks, such as $179 million in improvements at 81 state parks and historic sites from the 2011-12 and 2013-14 budgets. A third round of $90 million is part of the 2014-15 executive budget.
