Four injured in two-car crash on Route 56 in Colton


COLTON — Four people were injured in a two-car accident Wednesday afternoon on Route 56.

It happened just south of Tucker Road near the Pierrepont town line at 4:42 p.m. According to the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, a northbound vehicle driven by Thomas E. Belton, 19, of 5164 Route 41, Homer, Cortland County, crossed into the southbound lane and struck a vehicle driven by Cynthia M. Erwin, 59, of 99 County Route 58, Colton.

Mr. Belton was taken to Canton-Potsdam Hospital with injuries to his head and lower body. He then was flown to Fletcher Allen Health Care, Burlington, Vt.

Two passengers in his vehicle, Michelina E. DiMatteo, 18, of 21 Dana Crescent St., Brasher Falls, and Emily R. Colloca, 18, of 193 Hunter Ave., Babylon, also were taken to Canton-Potsdam Hospital.

Ms. Erwin also was brought to Canton-Potsdam Hospital.

Details of their injuries were unknown.

An investigation continues and charges are pending, according to sheriff’s deputies, who were assisted by state police, Colton Fire and Rescue and first responders from Parishville, Pierrepont and Potsdam.
