Interstate 81 was closed to southbound traffic for about five hours Wednesday between exits 38 and 36 because of heavy snow that caused multiple accidents.
The closure occurred after a multi-vehicle accident near Exit 36 in the village of Pulaski. According to the Oswego County 911 dispatch center, several people suffered minor injuries in the crash, which included multiple vehicles and two tractor-trailers.
The Oswego County Sheriffs Office said it responded to quite a few accidents on the highway Wednesday.
Initially, I-81 was closed for only about one mile between the off-ramp and on-ramp at Exit 36, and traffic was diverted through the village of Pulaski. Poor weather and traffic build-up led to the decision to extend the closure as far north as Exit 38 near the Jefferson County line.
Oswego County remains under a lake-effect snow warning until 4 p.m. today, facing 8 to 16 inches of additional snow in the most persistent bands.
