Alleged plane crash ends up false alarm

MASSENA - Several area law enforcement, fire and rescue agencies responded to the St. Lawrence Seaway near Cornwall Island at approximately 1:15 p.m. for what some people initially believed was a plane crash.

Among the agencies responding were the state police, park police, Massena Village Police, Massena Fire Department, and Massena Rescue Squad. Divers from surrounding agencies were also called, but turned around prior to arriving at the scene.

New York State Police Lt. Kevin Boyea confirmed reports nearly an hour later that the accident was a false alarm.

“The only thing we had reports of was a low flying plane with smoke,” he said. “There was never any report of a plane crash.”

St. Lawrence County Deputy Fire Cooridinator Frank Burns said the initial report was made by children on Cornwall Island with the emergency call originally going to Franklin County 911.

“They called into Franlin County and then it was turned over to us,” Mr. Burns said. “They did the right thing. It ended up being a good drill for us.”

Mr. Burns said the children saw what ended up being a Canadian Armed Forces plane fly over the the international bridge and then disappear out of sight.
