Massena Town Council votes to increase fire inspection fees

MASSENA — Town residents living outside the village limits once again will pay the same amount for fire inspection fees as village residents following a resolution passed this week by the Town Council.

“We’re trying to keep our fees in line with what the village is doing,” Town Supervisor Joseph D. Gray said during a public hearing this week that drew no comments.

Councilman Thomas C. Miller, a member of the Massena Volunteer Fire Department, said the fact that the fire department is doing these inspections is beneficial to firefighters should an emergency occur.

“It’s really beneficial to the volunteers that they continue to do the fire inspections,” he said, adding it helps give members of the department a familiarity with the interiors of the structures.

Mr. Miller also said that by switching from a flat rate to a rate based on a building’s square footage, the town is more in line with not only the village but other communities in the area.

Code Enforcement Officer Peter T. Devine said the fees are similar to what other communities in the county are charging and slightly less than what Potsdam charges.

“Everything is more expensive in Potsdam,” Mr. Gray said. “Their taxes are higher, too.”

The new fees will start at $25 for a building up to 1,000 square feet. A building between 1,000 and 3,000 square feet will be $50, and a building between 3,001 and 10,000 square feet will cost $100 to be inspected.

A building between 10,001 and 50,000 square feet will cost $150 to inspect, with a building between 50,001 and 100,000 square feet billed $200, and buildings over 100,001 square feet would be charged $500, with an additional $50 charged for each additional 10,000 square feet.

The initial inspection fee includes one follow-up inspection.

Additional inspections are $25 for buildings up to 3,000 square feet, $30 for buildings between 3,001 and 10,000 square feet, $40 for buildings 10,001 to 50,000 square feet, $50 for buildings 50,001 to 100,000 square feet and $100 for buildings over 100,000 square feet.
