North Country Freedom Homes director will retire next year

CANTON — Gregory A. Aldrich, director of services for North Country Freedom Homes, plans to retire early next year.

His successor has not yet been chosen.

Mr. Aldrich has been with North Country Freedom Homes for 25 years. He hopes to retire in January or February, as soon as a successor has been found and groomed.

“That’s going to be real difficult,” he said.

Mr. Aldrich’s duties used to be split between two people, but a search for a new director several years ago attracted only a few candidates, none of whom was suitable for the job, he said.

This time the center plans to take its time to find someone who is right for the job.

“We hope to find some more people that are very qualified this time around,” Mr. Aldrich said.

North Country Freedom Homes has housed more than 900 people recovering from drug addiction since opening in the 1970s.

Mr. Aldrich said he plans to spend his retirement taking care of his garden.

“Right now the plan is to take care of the apple and pear trees I’ve got,” he said.

The next director will have a lot to learn, Mr. Aldrich said, but he expects good things for the future of North Country Freedom Homes.

“We’ve got a bright future,” he said.
