OFA Cheerleaders gear For competitions

The competition season for Section 10 Cheerleaders is always a whirlwind three -four weeks.

OFA’s cheering squad, coached by Jackie Pinkerton, will hit the ground running for the 2014 campaign.

Running at full speed figuratively and literally.

On Friday night, the Devils will enter the Edwards-Knox Competition.

On Saturday, two members of the Devil squad, Donovan Smith and Charlotte Miller, after competing in the New York State Indoor Track-Field Championships at Cornell University will rejoin the squad to cheer for the OFA Boys Basketball team in the overall Section 10 Championships at SUNY Potsdam at 4 p.m.

The team will cap off the weekend by hosting the Blue Devil Invitational on Sunday beginning at 3 p.m.

“It is definitely going to be a busy weekend,” says OFA Coach Pinkerton.

“But the squad is really looking forward to it. This group works very hard.”

On Friday-Saturday, March 7-8, the OFA squad will compete in the Lisbon and Heuvelton competitions and are scheduled to compete in the first Gouverneur Competition on March 15 and enter the Potsdam Competition on March 16.

But that weekend’s plans could change if the number two state-ranked OFA Boys Basketball team reaches the NYS Class B Final Four at the Glens Falls Civic Center.

But it is one weekend at a time for 26-member OFA squad, which is the largest in school history.

The squad expanded in January in preparation for the competition season when track-field athletes Chelsea Montroy, Kayla Tolman, Charlotte Miller, Donovan Smith, Austin VanGorden and Skyler Martin and junior varsity basketball player Kelsey Pinkerton joined the game-cheering squad of Shelby Adams, Sara Badlam, Courtney Brabant, Mackenzie Bresett, Morgan Bova, Abby Carmody, Kiana Conger, Janelle Cordwell, Julia Decoursey, Morgan Gagnon, Moriah Hurst, Janelle LaRue, Hannah Leeder, Kiara LaSiege, Jessica Logan, Bre Mahnke, Amanda McGaw, Tina Menza and Kiana Zulauf.

“Having a larger squad means we can do more stunts and different pyramids and this season we will lengthen our dance routine. Last year the competition judges commented that our dance routine should be longer,” said Coach Pinkerton.

“The guys have brought a different personality to the team and Donovan Smith will do our gymnastics and tumbling.

In Sunday’s OFA competition, the host Devils will compete in the A Division with Gouverneur, Malone, Massena and Beekmantown. The B Division will feature Lisbon, Heuvelton, Edwards-Knox, Northern Adirondack and Clifton-Fine.

The admission cost will be $3 for adults and $2 for children and as usual the always popular cheergrams will be on sale.
