Watertown men indicted on federal gun charges

Two Watertown men have been indicted in federal court on four felony charges alleging they illegally possessed firearms.

Robert A. Williams, 21, and Robert O. Mono Sr., 27, were each named in grand jury indictments handed up Friday in U.S. District Court. The indictments contained counts of being a felon in possession of firearms and ammunition, possession of stolen firearms and possession of unregistered firearms.

It is alleged that, in Jefferson and Lewis counties between July 23 and Aug. 5, the men possessed four unregistered firearms: a 20-gauge double-barreled shotgun, two 12-gauge pump-action shotguns and a 16-gauge shotgun, each of which had been modified to have an overall length of less than 26 inches and a barrel less than 18 inches long. It also is alleged that three of the guns had been stolen.

It further was alleged that it is illegal for the men to possess the guns because of prior felony criminal convictions.

In Jefferson County Court in 2007, Mr. Mono was convicted of third-degree burglary and sentenced to time served at the Metro-Jefferson Public Safety Building and five years’ probation.

Mr. Williams has been convicted of four violent felonies — including four counts of third-degree burglary — in Jefferson County Court, and was sentenced to time served at the PSB and five years’ probation. One of the burglaries to which he admitted occurred at Dano’s Pizzeria in Felts Mills, where police said a torch was used in an attempt to access money inside an ATM, but no money was stolen because it was burned. The suspects fled when the torch set off the restaurant’s sprinkler system.

The indictments handed up Friday stemmed in part from an Aug. 5 traffic stop by Watertown police on Eastern Boulevard, during which a sawed-off shotgun was found in the men’s vehicle. Both men are being held at the PSB and are due to be arraigned Tuesday in federal court.
