LaPiene still alive for state wrestling podium

Tanner LaPiene, a Heuvelton Central freshman who has won three Section 10 wrestling titles for OFA, will enter today’s action at the New York State Wrestling Championship with a chance to match or better his fourth place finish in Division II last season. LaPiene, Massena’s Jeremy Malone (190) and Nathan Marshall (113) in D1 and Malone’s Jamiel Stapleton (145) in D2 were the only Section 10 wrestlers to reach today’s action.

After losing a 4-2 overtime decision to Nolan Foster of Hoosic Falls, LaPiene recorded two wins in the wrestlebacks. He decisioned Brandon Gould of Watkins Glenn (4) 8-2 and gained an 2-0 decision over Dolan McColgan of Petrides. Today he will match up with Ryan Hetrick of Section 6’s Southwestern.

The remainder of OFA’s five-wrestler contingent did not advance to the second day but eighth grader Cordell David (99), junior Bailey Phelps (145) and senior Alex Cole (170) all recorded victories. Senior Cody-Allen David (160) lost his first two matches by decision.

Cordell David decisioned fellow eighth grader, Mikey Bruno of Putnam Valley (1) 6-0, but suffered a 15-0 technical fall to top-seeded sophomore Dean Raymond of Deposit/Hancock in the second round. David’s first trip to the states ended in an 8-0 loss to sophomore Joe Sliwoski.

Bailey Phelps (152) was pinned by senior Cam Milliken of Albany Academy in the first round but rebounded with a pin over senior Samuel Cruz of Highlight (9) in the first round of the wrestleoffs.

Phelps’ weekend ended in a 2-1 loss to senior Eddie Hutschenreuter of Alden (5).

Senior Alex Cole gained a first round pin over Highland (9) junior Theodore Mapes but dropped into the wrestleback round after suffering a pin to the defending state champion in Warsaw (5) senior Burke Paddock. Cole bowed out in a 9-4 decision to senior Joe Turono of Section 8’s Clark.

Massena’s Nate Marshall (113lbs) and Nolan Terrance (285lbs) both advanced to the quarter finals with victories over wrestlers from PSAL.

Marshall defeated Shane Leguillow from Grand Street Campus 11-3 and Terrance pinned Harry Truman’s Noah Stanley. Marshall lost to returning state place finisher Jon Hass from Section Five 13-3, Terrance also lost to a returning place finisher James O’Hagan 9-7.

At 145lbs Malone’s Jamiel Stapleton impressed the Section 10 crowd with a dominating 13-0 win over Section 3’s Matt Norris. Stapleton led most of his second match against Section 3’s Alex Herringshaw in what might have been the most exciting match of the day. Stapleton was leading 3-2 with 12 seconds left in the match when Herringshaw captured the takedown to win 4-3. Other winners in the first round of wrestlebacks were Malone’s Cameron Searles(106), Gouverneur’s Aaron Bush(132) and Zach Ayen(138).
