HS roundup: Netto places seventh overall in state 100-yard breaststroke

WEBSTER — Michael Netto of Watertown finished seventh overall and fifth among public schools in the 100-yard breaststroke during the state boys swimming championships at Webster-Schroeder High School.

Netto swam the race in 57.65 seconds. Ben Cono of Smithtown captured the title with a state-record time of 54.72. Two-time defending champion Gunther Cassell of Huntington was second in 55.13. Liverpool’s Garrett Clarke, who beat Netto for the Section 3 title, finished third in 56.61.

Netto also took 13th among public schools in the 200 individual medley. He joined teammates Neal Ruparelia, Jacob Roux and Brad McKinney for a 14th-place finish in the 200 medley relay.

This was Netto’s fourth state competition.

HOCKEY

MASSENA 5, MONROE-WOODBURY 1

Patrick Manning and Wyatt Wilmshurst each supplied a goal and an assist as the Red Raiders pulled way late to top the Crusaders of Section 9 in a state Division I quarterfinal at Monsey.

Dylan Stone and Evan Kassian along with Manning scored in a three-goal third period for Massena (17-5-1), which takes on Section 5’s Fairport in the semifinals 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the Utica Memorial Auditorium.

Nick Pelosi scored the lone marker for Monroe-Woodbury (5-8-4).

WEBSTER-SCHROEDER 6, NORWOOD-NORFOLK 5

Joe Schuler’s hat trick helped the Warriors outlast the Flyers in a state Division II quarterfinal in Webster.

Matt Montgomery notched a goal and an assist for Section 5 Webster-Schroeder (17-7-4), which faces Section 2’s Queensbury in a Division II semifinal 3:15 p.m. Saturday at the Utica Memorial Auditorium.

Zeb Brown generated two goals and three assists, while Kaden Pickering added two goals and two assists for Norwood-Norfolk (17-5-0).
