A Syracuse firm has been awarded an Army contract to provide 10 radar systems used for drone operations, with one of them going to Fort Drum.

According to a news release from the office of Sen. Charles E. Schumer, D-N.Y., SRCTec received $7,222,543 to supply LSTAR radars to establish 10 Army Ground-Based Sense and Avoid system test sites around the country, including the one at the post.

It’s one of the first contracts awarded since the region was named one of six nationwide for the testing of drones in civilian airspace.

The media release said the system allows for the operation of drones in the national airspace without a chase plane or ground observer, detecting nearby aircraft and providing their operator with information to maintain safe separation.

The work is expected to be completed by Oct. 30, 2015.
